Check out IPÊ’s actions at CMS COP15 on migratory species – a series of events

From March 23 to 29, Campo Grande (MS) will host the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) on Migratory Species. The event is expected to bring together representatives from 122 countries and the European Union to jointly define priorities and the budget for the conservation of migratory species.

The conference takes place every three years and was established by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), a United Nations environmental treaty in force since 1979. The CMS promotes the conservation of migratory species, their habitats, and migration routes on a global scale.

Several outcomes are expected from CMS COP15. Among them are the evaluation of proposals to update Annex I (threatened species) and Annex II (species with an unfavorable conservation status) of the international treaty. The progress of Concerted Actions—coordinated efforts among countries to address threats to migratory species—will also be reviewed, along with regional conservation agreements and high-level political declarations reaffirming the global commitment to the conservation of migratory species.

IPÊ co-organizes COP15 with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change

IPÊ is one of the organizers of the event, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. IPÊ is involved in activities related to the High-Level Segment, participant reception, volunteer coordination, and the participation of Traditional and Indigenous Peoples and Communities (PCTI), with support from the Government of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, the GEF Pró-Espécies Project/FUNBIO/WWF-Brasil, and The Pew Charitable Trusts.

In addition, the Institute will bring essential topics to the center of the debate for the conservation of migratory species and biodiversity. Check out our actions at COP15:

Pantanal Day: “Pantanal in Motion: Science, Governance, and Financing for the Conservation of Migratory Species”

Event organized by IPÊ, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA)

This event will gather representatives from governments, scientific institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners to promote a strategic dialogue on ways to strengthen the conservation of migratory species and support sustainable development in the Pantanal. The discussion will focus on three main axes—science, governance and territorial management, and financing—with the goal of contributing to the construction of an Agenda for the Pantanal during Brazil’s presidency of the CMS, which will be led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change over the next three years.

Date: March 24, 2026
Time: 9:00 – 12:30
Location: Campo Grande Room, Blue Zone – CMS COP15 Bosque Expo, Campo Grande – MS, Brazil

Roundtable at Brazil Space: Conservation of Migratory Species in Native Grasslands – Synergies for Biodiversity and Climate Resilience

This event will highlight transformative approaches that integrate the conservation of migratory species and biodiversity with the sustainable management of native grasslands and wetlands. Case studies from key grassland regions—including the Pantanal and Pampas in Brazil—will be presented, showing how initiatives on private lands are essential to fill conservation gaps. Participants will explore climate-smart strategies such as efficient livestock systems, regenerative grazing, adaptive fire management, biodiversity-compatible production systems, and blended finance mechanisms as complementary tools to formal protected areas.

Speakers: Miriam Perilli (Coalizão Pontes Pantaneiras), Thaiane da Silva (Alianza del Pastizal), Carlos Eduardo Marinello (MMA), Ronaldo Morato (Panthera Brasil)
