Environmental Education Program "A Good Pontal for All"

Pontal do Paranapanema

The Environmental Education Program “Um Pontal Bom Para Todos” is a work that integrates different actors in the mobilization for the conservation of socio-environmental resources in the Pontal do Paranapanema, extreme west of São Paulo (SP). By carrying out projects that complement each other, the program is one of the key points of the IPÊ Conservation Model.

Environmental education activities in Pontal do Paranapanema began even before IPÊ was founded. In the 1980s, biologist Claudio Padua and his field assistant José de Souza, researchers of the black lion tamarin, and environmental educator Suzana Padua implemented an integrated program to conserve the species at Morro do Diabo State Park (PEMD), based on research, education and community involvement. During the first phase of research with the black lion tamarin, the need for environmental education became evident, as the researchers realized that conserving the species would require the support and involvement of the community surrounding the park, the last remaining large tract of Atlantic Forest in the interior.

Today, in Teodoro Sampaio, environmental education takes place continuously. One of the most significant results was the inclusion of environmental issues in the city’s official school curriculum. Over the years, IPÊ has expanded its environmental education activities to other municipalities in the Pontal region.

Project

1. Collective Construction of Knowledge for Socio-Environmental Sustainability of Pontal do ParanapanemaParanapanema.

The project's main axis is the practice of education for sustainability, in order to provide its audiences with socio-educational activities that contribute to a deeper reflection on local issues aimed at conservation and socio-environmental sustainability of Teodoro Sampaio. It aims to bring contributions mainly to the demands identified in studies and research carried out in the region, considered important in the search for solutions or reductions in environmental threats to water resources, forestry and biodiversity in the Pontal do Paranapanema Hydrographic Basin region.

Goals
  • Disseminate concepts, actions and educational strategies aimed at conserving water, forests and biodiversity in the Pontal do Paranapanema Hydrographic Basin region;
  • Promote environmental education actions with teachers, students, women, small rural producers and local actors in the municipality in the search for involvement and commitment in the socio-environmental sustainability issues of Teodoro Sampaio;
  • Provoke reflections regarding the reduction of impacts on water, forestry resources and the rich biodiversity still existing in the region;
  • Contribute to the shared commitment to the sustainability of the planet by aligning project activities with the 8 millennium goals proposed by the UN in 2000.
Who is it for?

The activities offered by the project are aimed at women, educators and education managers, students, community leaders and decision makers, among other social actors in the communities covered.

Main actions
  1. Thematic lectures, which promote the acquisition of knowledge, to be given to students and the community in general;
  2. Itinerant spaces for popular education and collective learning (mobile tents set up in public community spaces, with various environmental education activities and donation of tree seedlings);
