Atlantic Forest Corridors

Pontal do Paranapanema

The project is oriented towards promoting the conservation of forest resources, water resources, the neutralization of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, and the guarantee of environmental services in public-private areas within the Conservation Units of the Atlantic Forest in the far west of São Paulo.

The project’s activities also involve the following strategies:

  1. Strategic planning to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability;
  2. The systematization of processes, experiences and results for the dissemination and replication of lessons;
  3. Dissemination of the project’s initiatives, actions and results at regional, national and international level; and
  4. Transforming good practices into public policies aimed at the rational use of Brazilian forest and water resources.

    One of the great results already achieved by the project is the formation of the largest forest corridor planted in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil: 12km of forest and more than 2.3 million trees connecting the Morro do Diabo State Park and the Mico-Leão-Preto Ecological Station. The corridor is one of the strategies for protecting the black lion tamarin and other threatened species and is currently undergoing an assessment of ecosystem services, their benefits for biodiversity, carbon sequestration and soil and water quality.
