Considered to be the symbol species of the State of São Paulo, the Black Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus) is one of the rarest and most endangered primate species in the world. Endemic to the Atlantic Forest in the interior of São Paulo, it has been considered extinct for many years and, even today, its situation is serious because it is critically endangered. The IPÊ maintains scientific research and actions for the conservation of the species for more than 30 years. Due to our efforts, the mico is listed in a more hopeful category in the species’ red list and its habitat has been reestablished.
