Climate Schools Project
With the Climate Schools project, we want to expand the presence of climate education in basic education in schools, which is still incipient. It is extremely necessary to support students to become agents of change!
Through the project, IPÊ – Institute for Ecological Research provides knowledge about the causes and consequences of climate change and develops participatory methodologies to engage school communities in proposing solutions and acting collectively to address extreme climate events.
Partnership Iamar Institute, sponsorship Petrobras Sociambiental and collaboration AWS Amazon.
Climate Schools Project
We are living a unique moment in humanity with the climate emergency. We need to take measures to reduce the effects of climate change, or at least learn to live with them, and this should be a concern for all of us. After all, the planet is in danger and, with it, so are we.
The project begins by raising faculty awareness through the Climate Wall tool, a workshop model created in France in 2018, which is already replicated in more than 50 countries. The educational tool consists of a game of 42 cards with scientific information extracted from the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The goal is to bring scientific knowledge in a playful way about the impacts and possible solutions to the climate crisis.
The next step is to constitute in each Climate School the “socio-environmental collective”. A group of school community members interested in leading the climate change mitigation and adaptation actions that will be implemented. Students, families, educators, and school staff can be part of the collectives, elaborate the projects, manage and keep the initiatives running with IPÊ’s technical and financial support. Thus, the Climate Schools become poles of irradiation of examples of sustainability actions for the communities where they are located. Themes related to vegetable gardens with agro-forestry principles, cisterns to capture rainwater, composting and the efficient management of solid waste are present in the projects of the socio-environmental collectives of the Climate Schools.
The project takes place in five schools in the municipality of Nazaré Paulista and in one school in the municipality of Paulínia – SP with the partnership of the Alair Martins Institute and sponsorship from the Petrobras Socio-environmental program.
IPÊ has been developing the project in three other schools located in the municipalities of Osasco, Santana de Parnaíba, and Paulínia, in collaboration with AWS Amazon.
