Given the large number of records of tapirs within the urban perimeter of Campo Grande, capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, this research of INCAB’s Urban Tapir Project arises with the objective of monitoring the animals that frequent the city and evaluating the impact of potential anthropic threats to the species.

Considering the lack of information on these animals in urban areas, this study will be important for assessing the health status of tapirs and their spatial ecology in a highly anthropized environment. Monitoring the individuals captured will make it possible to draw up maps of areas of use, as well as carry out a population modeling process, with the aim of developing and implementing conservation strategies for the species, which will be essential for the long-term viability of this possible population.

In an effort to involve the city’s residents and encourage citizen science, a database of tapir sightings was created based on information provided by the population. With this data, the researchers intend to identify the locations most frequently used by the animals. During the month of March 2021, the INCAB-IPÊ team carried out its first ‘field’ expedition around the city to reconnoiter the existing green areas, particularly those where tapirs have already been spotted.

A form was also developed to collect as much information as possible about each sighting. Anyone who has spotted a tapir in the city can access this online form via the LINK below and include all the details in a few minutes. This information will be taken into account when defining capture sites.
