Navigating Education in the Amazon

Lower Rio Negro

The Maíra I boat goes around the communities integrating them and promoting socio-environmental activities.

To carry out the project, IPÊ has a boat, the “Maíra I”, which is an essential means of transport to reach the riverside communities, since access to the region is exclusively by river. The boat travels along the lower Rio Negro to the localities, promoting training, supporting community organization and educational activities. The boat has accommodation for 16 people in cabins and 10 in hammocks.

The “Maíra I” was donated to IPÊ by the Martins Group at the end of 2003. This business group, based in Uberlândia (MG), operates in the wholesale market. In addition to its business objectives, the Martins Group supports socio-environmental conservation projects in various regions of Brazil.
