Agroforestry Systems

Pontal do Paranapanema

Agroforestry systems (SAFs) are productive systems that enhance production in a sustainable way, balancing economic, social, and environmental gains. For over 20 years, IPÊ has been working with this system in Pontal do Paranapanema, together with rural settlers, in an area of great impact for the protection of the Atlantic Forest and all its biodiversity.

The projects aimed at this system have already yielded important results, such as bringing socio-economic benefits to more than 200 people over the years, contributing to the food security of families through agro-ecological production and also forming the largest reforested corridor in the Atlantic Forest, which benefits species of fauna. The projects are in line with IPÊ’s objectives of thinking about and implementing, together with the community, a more sustainable landscape for Pontal do Paranapanema.

  • Agroforestry Systems for Family Farming as Biodiversity Corridors

To disseminate this concept, IPÊ carries out rural extension work with small farmers and technical support on their properties, sharing knowledge about the methodology. With the aim of extending the reach of this message, the Institute participated in a publication reporting on the experience. Download it HERE.

In addition, IPÊ has developed a free series of Video Lessons on SAFs, with four modules, for those who want to implement SAFs on their property. The initiative was supported by the Microbacias II Sustainable Rural Development Program (PDRS), the World Bank and the São Paulo State Environment Secretariat.

The content is also available in PDFin a booklet supported by the Federal Management Council for the Defense of Diffuse Rights, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Federal Government’s National Consumer Law Secretariat.
