In addition to walking the Black Lion Tamarin Trail, students took part in storytelling activities inspired by the memories of Sebasti\u00e3o dos Santos, affectionately known as \u201cTi\u00e3o,\u201d a lifelong resident of the Pontal do Paranapanema who shared stories about the region\u2019s transformation and the importance of restoring forest habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ipe.org.br\/images\/2026-02-22_TIAO-NA-PRACA_foto4-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipe.org.br\/images\/2026-02-22_TIAO-NA-PRACA_foto4-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ipe.org.br\/images\/2026-02-22_TIAO-NA-PRACA_foto4-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/ipe.org.br\/images\/2026-02-22_TIAO-NA-PRACA_foto4.jpeg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Art meets conservation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the highlights of the celebration was the inauguration of a large mural dedicated to the black lion tamarin, painted by S\u00e3o Paulo-based artist and activist Fernando Berg on the side wall of the Teodoro Sampaio City Hall building. Organized as part of the <em>IP\u00ca in Motion<\/em> initiative, the event combined healthy lifestyles with biodiversity conservation and raised funds that will be directly invested in actions led by the Black Lion Tamarin Conservation Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More than 40 years protecting an endangered primate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once believed to be extinct for nearly 70 years, the black lion tamarin (<em>Leontopithecus chrysopygus<\/em>) was rediscovered in the Pontal do Paranapanema region in 1970. Since 1984, IP\u00ca\u2019s Black Lion Tamarin Conservation Program has been working to protect the species and restore the Atlantic Forest landscape.
