The water supply for around 14 million people depends on this system (5 million in the interior and 9 million in the S\u00e3o Paulo Metropolitan Region). Several remnants of the Atlantic Forest in this region, as well as being home to species of fauna and flora at varying levels of threat of extinction, provide one of the most important ecosystem services for mankind: the protection of water sources.<\/p><p>The &#8220;Nascentes Verdes, Rios Vivos&#8221; (Green Springs, Living Rivers) project integrates reforestation, research, community involvement and environmental education actions to raise awareness of the importance of water and the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest among the region&#8217;s residents and decision-makers. Furthermore, over the years of work, the project carried out a survey of the mammals that inhabit the region's fragmented forests, and that need their habitat conserved.<\/p><p>For the activities, IP\u00ca implemented a native tree nursery, with a production capacity of 40,000 seedlings per year. The nursery meets the demands of reforestation and environmental education activities, such as seedling production workshops and educational plantings. Other environmental education actions include thematic lectures given by fauna specialists, interpretative walks with the dissemination of ethnobotanical knowledge, workshops to train educators in Environmental Education, distribution and planting of native trees aimed at students, teachers, owners and producers rural areas and local community.<\/p><p>The project activities follow the IP\u00ca Conservation Model, based on the integration of endangered species research, environmental education, habitat conservation, community involvement, sustainable development, landscape interventions and contributions to public policies.
